Parent / Carers Support Programme

Posted on September 8th, 2023

This 8-week online Parents/Carers Support Group is a safe and confidential space for parents/carers to gain information and skills to support their young person.

Supported by a Psychologist from the Brandon Centre with practical support from a Mind Support Worker, this pilot is funded through London NHS providers.

From the first 5 cohorts, of over 80 parents, the following outcomes were achieved:

  • Reduced burden on CAMHs and Primary care: Parents reported a 56% reduction in CAMHs contact, and 75% reduction in GP contact.
  • Perceived reduction in CYP Acuity: Significant reported improvements in the Mental Health of the young person – from clinical to sub-clinical/borderline
  • Parents Mental Health Improved: 90% of the parents who attended the programme reported that it had a beneficial and positive impact on their own emotional wellbeing
  • Parental Stress Reduced: The parental Stress Scale measured pre and post group showed improvements in parental stress levels in 61.11% of parents following the group intervention.

The next series of workshops starts on 6th or 8thSeptember, but parents can enroll in the second week.

Those who are eligible include parent/carers whose adolescents (11-16) are on a CAMHS treatment waiting list with the main presenting concerns of:

  • anxiety,
  • depression,
  • self-harm
  • and/or suicidality

(Does NOT include PTSD, an eating disorder or significant learning disability but does include those on the neurodevelopmental pathway waiting list).
